Water fed poles have been around the window cleaning industry for a while now, but have not been fully adopted by window cleaners yet. Many of them use the poles, but a lot of window cleaners don't make the switch due to cost, unwillingness to learn the technique or simply they prefer ladder work.

A water fed pole allows window cleaners to clean mid range windows from the ground, via a telescopic pole with a brush on the end. A thin hose runs either around the outside of the pole, or through the center and pushes a stream of water from two or more nozzles in the brush head. The water fed pole does use more water than traditional cleaning methods, but in Australia a water restriction exemption is easily attainable due to the safety benefits using this system provides.

To reduce water waste use a thin micro bore hose around 5mm which reduces water flow and increases pressure. Using a standard garden hose will use more water for the same level of pressure an also significantly increase the weight of the pole.

The windows are cleaned by pre-soaking, then scrubbing the glass with the brush head and finally rinsing the glass with water. This method is just as effective as the traditional squeegee and washer combination, but is much safer. Any window between 2 - 4 stories can comfortably be cleaned, but even higher floors can be reached. The current record for water fed pole cleaning is 88ft from the ground.

These poles can also be used with a De Ionize or Reverse Osmosis water filtration systems to produce mineral free water that attracts dirt away from the glass leaving it cleaner for longer periods. A de-ionize filtration system uses a resin inside a tank to attract the impurities of the water so the water that leaves the tank is 100% pure water and better for cleaning.

If you do not like climbing ladders or are worried about the safety aspects, a water fed pole is an effective solution and it completely eliminates the risk of falling from a ladder or any high point.

Garden hose reels are just like any product where you can find one for a cheap price and the quality will not be as good as a nice heavy duty garden hose reel. When buying a garden hose cart or reel you have two options; plastic or metal. Metal will most likely be the more durable quality of the two but you run into problems like rust, which will eventually break down.

Metal hose reels and carts will be the strongest and if you buy a stainless steel unit you should be protected against corrosion and rust. Most stainless steel reels are constructed with a heavy-duty frame and can with stand up to 4000 PSI. With a professional grade heavy-duty stainless steel hose reel you will be paying more but there always are other options. Overall metal will withstand more abuse but you need to care more for them to avoid rust and other metal destroying acids. If you require it, you should be able to get a heavy duty reel that holds more hose than a plastic reel. Some of the sturdy reels are manually cranked to rewind the hose but you can also get an heavy duty automatic garden reel.

Plastic hose reels can also be very heavy-duty and a little more cost effective than metal garden hose reels. Plastic comes in differnet grades and a top grade plastic hose cart or reel can withstand a lot of pressure and abuse. You do have to be careful of the sun because it can really wear done the plastic after a while. Heavy-duty plastic reels do come as wall mounted or ground mounted and can hold hoses from 50 feet up to 300 feet, with the most common size being 100 feet.

Now matter what you get it always comes down to the bottom line, "you get what you pay for". If you want a heavy duty item you will most likely have to spend a little more money. But in the long run it will end up saving you money by not having to buy the same item over and over again because of cheap quality. Over time buying the same item time and time again can get costly. It is well worth the investment to go for a high quality reel from the start. If you don't you may have to buy several reels because the cheaper ones will keep breaking. A high quality reel will last years and end up saving you money.
